The Great Refractor Telescope at Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton; California HD Video

refractor telescopes video

Visit my website at www.junglejoel.com - the historic 36 inch Lick Refractor was constructed at the request of wealthy California businessman James Lick. The telescope was built in the 1880s and saw first light in January 1888. James Lick died before the construction of his observatory began, and he is interred at the base of the 36" telescope pier, making the dome and telescope his tomb and memorial. At the time of its construction, the 36" Refractor was the largest telescope in the world and today remains the second largest refractor in existence. The telescope is still occasionally used for scientific work, but it's primarily use today is for education and public outreach. Please rate and comment, thanks!
